Okinawa in the past was known as the Ryukyu Kingdom, an independent state until the late 19th century in the Meiji Era. Shuri Castle
The most significant monument to the present Ryukyu Kingdom which used to serve as a royal palace is the Shuri Castle. The Shuri Castle is also one of the main attractions in Naha City on Okinawa Honto. One reason tourists love to stroll here is to enjoy the gusuku architecture of the castle which is built in a traditional Okinawa style.
Sadly, just like any other castle, the Shuri Castle has also been destroyed several times and had to be restored during 1958 and 1992. So the building that the tourist loves seeing that is standing right now is not the original anymore.
Okinawa World
Located at the south of the main island is a theme park which encompasses the Gyokusendo Cave and is dedicated to Okinawa culture, called the Okinawa World. The best tourist highlight spot in the theme park is the 3,000 years old limestone cave which stretches up to 5km — the Gyokusendo Cave. Okinawa is a great option to stroll on rainy days too! Tourists can go into the mysterious cave and wander for 890 meters on the walkway, how amazing is that stroll!
There are a lot of souvenir stalls found outside the cave where tourists can pick-up and choose some of local trinkets including snake liquor which is unique as one of the delicacies in Okinawa.
Iriomote Island
Iriomote Island is known for having an interior that is covered in thick jungle. The island is also close to Ishigaki Island. Iriomote is the largest island of Yaeyama Island that can be accessed by a speed boat in just 40 minutes from Ishigaki Island. The island itself is called the national park because it is known for its untouched wild nature as it is 90% covered in jungle and mangrove forest.
If you are an explorer and always want to be on their feet on a holiday vacation in Okinawa, then Iriomote is the best place you’ll ever be. The top activity on the island is exploring its rich and abundant nature by sea kayaking, paddle boarding and hiking. The island also has amazing beaches to see with white sand and crystal clear water.
Taketomi Island
A small island of the Yaeyama islands group located 4km south of ishigaki island is called the Taketomi Island or Taketomijima. It is a good choice to travel here if you want to see a lot of sights in a short span of time because this island is one of the smallest islands located in Okinawa, you can get around the island quite quickly. Taketomi island is also best known for its well-preserved Ryukyu village with its charming traditional Okinawa houses and stone walls. You can trek through the entire island and have a look at the little traditional villages and see how people have lived and worked in this part of Japan for centuries.
In the island you can choose what type of travel transportation you want, it may be just by walking, renting a bicycle or experiencing their traditional water buffalo cart, wherein you are in a cart being pulled by a lumbering local buffalo which is a popular way to get around the island.
