TADAO ANDO

Born in 1941 in Osaka Japan, this renowned architect has proven that beauty lies in the simplest of things. Told to have learned architecture through self-learning, Ando’s works are praised globally. His magnificent works include the Church of the Light, Pulitzer Arts Foundation, and the Chichu Art Museum. His major works have been applauded in the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) Prize for the Row House in Sumiyoshi in 1979, Japan Art Academy Prize in 1993, Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1995, Person of Cultural Merit (Japan) in 2003, International Union of Architects (UIA) Gold Medal in 2005, John F. Ando also held exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in 1991 and the Centre Pompidou in 1993. He would also teach architecture as a guest professor at Yale University, Columbia University and Harvard University. Ando is a professor at the University of Tokyo from 1997 and professor emeritus of the University of Tokyo since 2003.

ARMANI CASA

This origami-like building made with black steel is HH Style/Armani Casa. A temporary structure built in Tokyo in 2005 as a collaboration between Ando, HH Style (Japanese online home shop), Armani Casa and Boffi (kitchen and bath company). The angular space featured a corrugated white metal interior with an open, airy feel.

MUSEUM OF LITERATURE

The Museum of Literature in Himeji, Japan is made with glass and concrete. It is the home to the writings of a famous Japanese philosopher Tetsuro Watsuji and other eight local writers. The entrance to the museum is provided by a ramp that gently ascends over tiered pools of water lined with crushed rocks. The building was completed in 1991 and the annex building was completed in 1996 which houses the works of writer, Ryotaro Shiba.

HYOGO PREFECTURAL MUSEUM OF ART

The Hyōgo Prefectural Museum of Art is located in southern Japan. The museum houses sculptures, prints and paintings of the earthquake that devastated the region in 1995. The concrete structure is designed by Ando. It has the architect’s signature of minimalism. The museum was officially opened in 2002.

ANDO’S PRINCIPLES

Combining traditional Japanese influences with the design principles of Modernism, Ando has developed a unique building language that makes use of concrete, wood, water, light, and space, all in harmony with nature. Tadao Ando’s body of work is known for its creative use of natural light and for structures that follow natural forms of the environment, rather than conforming to the constructed space of a building. Ando’s creations are often characterized by complex three-dimensional circulation paths, which weave between interior and exterior space. Formed both inside large-scale geometric shapes and in the spaces between them, these paths function as routes of contemplation. His work has been described as having a haiku like effect and being tied to zen philosophy. He is also known for being a brutalis because of the prominence of raw building materials seen on most of his designs.

His works are admirable because he maximizes the free materials given to us which is LIGHT and WATER. His projects are so simple yet so beautiful. Ando is a legitimate minimalist. His designs change faces depending on which time of day and creates a beautiful harmony between concrete and light. For someone who self-taught himself to the world of architecture, Ando surely made his name known across the globe.
