Seasonal Activities and Events in Saitama (Tokyo Furnished Apartment)
Saitama is a prefecture very close to Tokyo which makes it a commuter place as it is very accessible even from Central Tokyo. It is a place with a lot of tourist attractions that may not be known to foreign travelers but is definitely worth the visit. One thing that makes Saitama unique is its preservation of the historical town Kawagoe, which means “Little Edo”. Kawagoe is a great place to visit if you want to experience what Japan was centuries ago.
Aside from the famous Kawagoe, there are more attractions to enjoy in Saitama such as spots for cherry blossoms viewing, an underground channel, museums, parks, and other unique places. There are also several attractions and activities that are best enjoyed in specific seasons.
Experience a Youthful Spring
Spring is a very full-packed season in Japan as it is the season for cherry blossoms to flourish. Every Spring, Saitama’s parks and mountains wear vibrant colors with its blooming flowers. During this season, Saitama’s most famous Satte Sakura Festival is held at Gongendo Park. With about 1,000 cherry blossom trees that stretch along the riverbank, Satte Sakura Festival displays white and pink cherry blossoms with yellow mustard rapeseed flowers beside it. It is a breathtaking view that can only be joined annually.
Omiya Park and the neighboring Hikawa-jinja Shrine are also a well-visited place to picnic under the cherry blossoms in spring.
Get Adventurous on Summer
During the summer season, people usually spend time by the banks of the Arakawa River and stroll by the nearby trails of Arakawa River Park. Visitors and locals can also enjoy an exciting ride cruising down the whitewater rapids on Arakawa River with a tiny wooden boat.
One more thing to look forward to every summer is the Kumagaya festival. It is considered as one of the best summertime festivals which features a colorful parade of floats that depict legendary Japanese historical features. The festival also features portable shrines, music, special events, and food and drink.
Feel the Vibrant Energy on Autumn
Autumn is the season for the famous Kawagoe Festival. The spectacular floats that are featured in this festival are said to have roots dating back to the early years of the Edo Period. Paper lanterns, music, dance, and numerous food and souvenir stalls also fill the streets of Kawagoe during this season.
Aside from the vibrant colors during the autumn season, one thing that locals and even people from outside Japan look forward to in Saitama is the Tour de France Saitama Criterium held every October. It is a racing event where riders from other countries and Japanese cyclists come together to compete in a 3,5km long circuit.
