Dotonbori. A Humble Merchant’s Dream

When it all started…

It all started with a desire to broaden the economic potential of their city. Yasui Doton envisioned joining these two mighty rivers; Umezu River and Kizugawa River into a canal system that would launch a new method of transportation into the area.

Due to an unfortunate event, Yasui Doton lost his life at the Siege of Osaka in 1615 and the project was ceased. Influenced by Doton’s great aspirations, his cousins decided to own the project and took it where the late Yasui Doton had left off. Within a year after his death, the project has seen light. The canal that is popularly known today as Dotonbori was completed and was named after Yasui Doton.

After the canal’s completion, the new transportation system indeed has paved the way for the city to flourish. Every corner of the city is filled with richness, prosperity and opportunity. Commerce emerged successfully as businesses sprouted like beans. At the peak of its success, Dotonbori had six Kabuki theaters, five Bunraku theaters and a mechanical puppet theater, the Takeda Karakuri. These theaters began to illuminate the canal’s southern bank.

Dotonbori’s northern bank was also the birthplace of Osaka’s food district. Budding teahouses and restaurants began to flood the northern bank as the crowd’s leaving from the theaters created demands for food and drinks. The canal has served its ultimate purpose in enriching the lives of the people in the area.
Without Doton’s marvelous ambition, Dotonbori won’t be known today as the heart of Osaka.
